IT REALLY ISN'T PADDLERS VS POWER BOATERS

Ever since the special OSMB hearing regarding the use of the Holgate Channel and Ross Island Lagoon, there has been an ongoing depiction that this is a paddlers versus power boaters issue. As much as it seems this way, as both groups have a lot at stake in the decisions made regarding this area of the river, it really is a case of the original petitioners trying to use this "angle" to garner support for a closure of the area to anything but non-motorized craft.

Congratulations to all…. Huge Success with our combined efforts.... OSMB sides with the boating community and leaves Ross Island open to all boats, motorized and non-motorized.

A special THANK YOU to everyone that got involved and gave vital testimony in tonight’s meeting that made a difference in the outcome with the OSMB Board Members in the final vote.

The common focus tonight at the Special OSMB Meeting held down town Portland concerning Ross Island and Holgate channel among the boating community was education and compromise as the first step instead of the closure proposal presented to the City of Portland and the OSMB earlier this year by the paddle enthusiast.

NEWSLETTER JULY 2009 - LET'S KEEP THE BALL ROLLING

I hope everyone has heard the "good" news that the Oregon State Marine Board rejected the proposed restriction of the use of Ross Island Lagoon and the Holgate Channel. In a special hearing, the OSMB allowed a few speakers to provide additional comments on the subject. The Boaters' Rights Coalition of Oregon was represented as well as several of our members spoke. It was this testimony in the comments of the OSMB that helped sway the vote (3 to 2) in our favor.

REMEMBER THE GOOD OLD DAYS?

I hope everyone has had the opportunity to get out and enjoy the end of spring and the kickoff of this year's boating season. Maybe you've been skiing, wakeboarding, fishing or just out for a cruise on the water. BUT, this could all be a thing of the past if everyone doesn't get involved to help regulate what the Oregon State Marine Board has been doing as far as restricting the use of our water. If we don't act now, we'll all be sitting around thinking...remember the good old days when we used to....

THE REAL STORY! A MUST READ! COMMENTS FOR THE PUBLIC RECORD AGAINST ADDING 5 MPH/NO WAKE AREA ON HOLGATE CHANNEL

May 29, 2009
(Sent to the Oregon State Marine Board)

I have prepared the following comments on behalf of Mr. Mark Bruun, Portland, Oregon.

"Quotations" indicate what was said in the petition.

Since 1959 the Marine Board has done an outstanding job promoting boating, boating safety and education and environmental stewardship. In addition, the Marine Board is one of the nation’s leaders in developing boating facilities throughout Oregon, serving all classes of recreational boaters, all types of recreational watercraft, using sound environmental policies as a basis for the program. Although this proposal falls short on several fronts, it does bring to the forefront an important debate regarding the need for expansion of the Mandatory Boater Education Program and registration to include paddlecraft.

We need your help! Time is running out! Deadline May 31st. Outcome of Portlands Marine Board meeting held last night May 27th...

An estimated 500 people crowded last nights Marine Board Meeting in downtown Portland. The vast majority of attendees voiced their opinion FOR proposed (Option B) which would rule to make the Ross Island Lagoon & The Holgate Channel a "No Wake" 5 mph zone. This would be detrimental to many water enthusiasts.........
